Post & Rail Fencing in Derby & Derbyshire
Post and rail fencing is one of the oldest and most versatile fencing styles — and for good reason. Simple in construction, economical over long runs, and perfectly suited to the varied rural and semi-rural landscape around Derby and through the Derbyshire countryside, it remains the go-to choice for anyone who needs to define a boundary, contain animals, or mark out a large area without the expense of a solid close board fence.
We install post and rail fencing across all of Derby and into the wider Derbyshire area, using FSC-certified, pressure-treated softwood throughout for maximum longevity. Whether you need 10 metres of 2-rail fencing for a suburban garden boundary or 300 metres of 3-rail fencing for a paddock in the Derbyshire countryside, our team handles it professionally and efficiently.
Rail Configurations — 2-Rail, 3-Rail & 4-Rail
Post and rail fencing comes in different rail configurations depending on the purpose and the livestock or stock you need to contain. We install all standard configurations:
2-Rail Fencing
3-Rail Fencing
4-Rail Fencing

Where Post & Rail Fencing Is Used
Large Gardens
A cost-effective way to define the boundary of a large or semi-rural garden in Derby without the cost of close board fencing over a long run. Particularly suited to properties in Darley Abbey, Allestree, and outlying Derby villages.
Equestrian & Paddocks
The standard choice for paddock fencing across Derbyshire. We install 3-rail post and rail for horse paddocks, with the option to add electric fence insulators to the rails if required.
Agricultural Land
Field boundaries, farm tracks, and livestock areas where a robust but cost-effective timber fence is needed over long distances. We cover Derbyshire farms as well as Derby properties.
Public Amenity Areas
Post and rail fencing is a popular choice for public footpaths, nature reserves, and public green spaces where a natural-looking, open boundary is preferred over solid fencing.
Commercial & Landscaping
Retail parks, business parks, and commercial landscaping projects use post and rail to define planted areas, car park edges, and pedestrian zones in an attractive, low-maintenance way.
Driveways & Pathways
Low 2-rail post and rail either side of a driveway or garden path gives a classic country estate appearance, particularly popular in period and rural-style properties around Derby.
Timber Specification & Longevity
The longevity of post and rail fencing depends almost entirely on the quality and treatment of the timber used. We use only pressure-treated (tanalised) softwood on every installation — never untreated timber, which can begin to fail within just a few years.
- Posts: 75mm × 75mm or 100mm × 100mm square sawn or round posts, pressure-treated UC4 rated (suitable for ground contact), typically set 600–750mm into the ground
- Rails: 87mm × 38mm sawn softwood rails, pressure-treated to UC3 standard, morticed into the posts or face-fixed depending on the application
- Post treatment: We coat the in-ground section of posts with additional end-grain preservative before installation for maximum ground contact protection
- Expected lifespan: 15–25 years for pressure-treated post and rail, depending on ground conditions and climate exposure
